Originally built as a 1960s warehouse, and located within Islington’s ‘Area of Special Character’, 11-12 Great Sutton Street had become disconnected from modern demands. Foster Projects appointed Conran and Partners with the task of revitalising the building, ensuring it would appeal to contemporary tenants while respecting its industrial roots.
The approach has been one of thoughtful curation—grounded in an awareness of the construction industry’s significant contribution to carbon emissions. By carefully removing layers that detracted from its original form and restoring key elements has preserved and enhanced the building’s identity. These sensitive interventions, focused on consuming as little as possible, not only honour the buildings story but also adapt it to meet the needs of today’s users in a functional, modern workplace.
By preserving and revealing the original features of 11-12 Great Sutton Street, the building maintains its historical narrative, ensuring a connection to its past while fostering a deeper relationship with its environment. This approach also addresses modern challenges, such as the compromised retail façade, by introducing full height glazing to flood the interior with natural light and create a more inviting street presence. Alongside a new self-contained level-access entrance, these enhancements promote openness and strengthen ties with the surrounding community.
