Conran and Partners and Finnish lighting brand Secto Design announce a collaboration as part of this year’s programme of Clerkenwell Design Week, which sees the design of an immersive window display and exhibition at Conran and Partners’ studio on Great Sutton Street.
Designed by Conran and Partners, the window display features a triptych of themes – Forest & Materiality, Lakes & Reflection, and Light & Contrast – which aim to evoke the emotions inspired by the Finnish natural environment. These themes offer a visual journey into the country’s unique interplay of light, nature, and craftsmanship, drawing a connection between Secto Design’s lighting pieces and the natural world from which they are inspired.
Forest & Materiality is a celebration of birch, Finland’s national tree. The first piece (from left to right) is based on a tree ring section, expressed through the medium of Secto Design’s pressed billets and showcasing the brand’s DNA.
Lakes & Reflection draws from Finland’s nickname as the “land of a thousand lakes”, interpreting this through the use of mirrors to create a reflective central installation. Each mirror reflects a quarter of four lamps to create a poetic sense of water and symmetry.
Light & Contrast pays homage to the brand’s original inspiration: the golden light filtering through a Finnish forest, cast by the sunset as it lingers low over the horizon in the northern evening sky. The final piece features components from Secto Design’s Kumulo lamp, arranged in an array and dramatically spot-lit to create contrast and shadow play.
The internal exhibition expands on the window installation, further exploring Secto Design’s ethos, highlighting its commitment to innovation and sustainability. A central crate narrates the metamorphosis of the lamp taking visitors through its stages of transformation, from bark to lamp, backdropped by a showcase of Secto Design’s innovative, sustainable packaging materials.
