South Place Hotel, in the City of London, marked the first hotel in the D&D portfolio and a fresh design challenge in which gastronomy plays a key part.

South Place can be seen as a series of restaurants with rooms rather than a traditional hotel, so the ground floor comprises restaurants and bars, with another restaurant on the rooftop. The first floor then includes uniquely designed private dining rooms as well as offering a gym and spa. Designed with a sophisticated city audience in mind, the spaces draw people in with a relaxed yet refined atmosphere.

The exterior, by Allies and Morrison, is restrained and more akin to an office building to suit its environment, so we wanted to create an internal world that opened up to reveal lots of textural, vibrant and exciting layers.

The ground floor is designed as a series of spaces that flow into one another – from a private and tucked-away reception area to the bar and restaurant facing the street. South Place Chop House on the ground floor is a social eatery and very much intended as a local venue, with a gutsy feel and a hearty menu.

The aesthetic of the Michelin-starred Angler Restaurant on the top floor is completely different, providing an atmospheric and bright space that opens up to the views of the skyline. The Angler Terrace, which sits alongside it, also has an inviting yet intimate rooftop garden.

The design of the guest rooms needed to respond to a well-travelled, well-informed business audience, with visitors coming in from many different parts of the world. The style presents a balance of luxury and comfort, with an elegant palette of materials overlaid with unique and colourful furniture and art.

The provision of amenities to an opulent level was vital, with spacious bathrooms, integrated bars and substantial desks. Feature lighting here and in the communal areas also became an important motif, adding drama and character.

We collaborated with two young galleries that helped procure the art for the hotel. Much of the artwork and lighting are bespoke, having been commissioned especially for South Place Hotel.
