Saltdean Lido
Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company
Architecture

Saltdean Lido was the first operating lido in Britain to be listed as Grade II. It was designed by RWH Jones in the thirties, but the art deco structure has gradually been neglected, and fifty years later a campaign group set up to save it. An application to English Heritage was submitted in 2010 asking for an upgrade review and since then we have helped with proposals to save the lido.

As a long-term supporter of the campaign, we have advised extensively on its restoration and revitalisation. On the 17th June 2017, a synchronised swim marked the ticketed opening of the heated outdoor pool to the general public. As architects and designers living and working in the area, we have an immense passion for the project, and were there to experience the elated occasion for ourselves.

Now that the majority of the pool area is complete, attention is turning to the larger project of renovating the rest of the 1930’s building which will include community facilities to support the long-term life of the project.

The team behind this bid will turn the lido into a national destination, but most importantly it is the heart of Saltdean and a much loved friend. This is the beginning of a new life for Saltdean Lido.
