London Design Festival | Food Religion
A collaboration between Conran + Partners and Studio Apetit
Interiors

This exciting collaboration between Conran + Partners, Studio Appétit and German Gymnasium challenges the boundaries between Food and Faith through the realm of architecture and design. Exploring the idea of Food Worship in contemporary culture, during London Design Festival, the cathedral-like volume of German Gymnasium played sanctuary to a six-metre high installation and host to an interactive culinary experience.

The elements towards the base of the installation represent the foundations of food and cooking which rises into a celebration of food consumption. Conran + Partners worked with a team of expert manufacturers to deliver this ambitious structure including Claybrook (Stone), Mark Taylor Design (Timber), IntoLighting (Metal + Lighting), Aarnio Originals (Colour) and Milk (Structure).

The design concept for our award-winning interiors of German Gymnasium is a refined modern insertion within the existing building and was inspired by its Germanic roots; a contemporary Bauhaus version of a European Grand Café. Our ‘Food Religion’ installation showcases the beauty and integrity of five materials taken from the Bauhaus curriculum. We worked within their natural strengths and limitations to drive their form, scale and texture with a simplicity, unique shape and function coming together to create a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’.
